With Mycoplasma bovis stealing the headlines, there is little discussion about Theileria. However, we are still seeing cases of Theileria – especially now during calving season. Theileria has been in the Waikato now for more than 5 years, but we are still sporadically seeing cattle with anaemia (low red blood cells) caused by Theileria. These cattle are either under great stress (usually dairy cows after calving) or 2-3 month old beef calves. Interestingly, it seems that some properties have more problems with Theileria in beef calves than other properties. There is the possibility that either the environment or the genetics of the cattle is contributing to this problem. If you think you may have an issue with Theileria on your property, contact one of your local Anexa Vets.
