De-sexing is known by many different names but the goals are more or less the same for all pets: keeping them healthy and avoiding unexpected/unwanted litters. We understand this is likely your pet’s first surgery and you may be concerned. We also know you want to do it right – to make the process as comfortable and safe as possible for them. Why should I de-sex my pet?
At Anexa, we strongly recommend de-sexing your fur-babies and we thought it might be helpful to share why. Some of the following are obvious; some are lesser-known but very important:
- No unexpected and/or unwanted pregnancies and litters
- No messy heats or stressful management of them
- A heavy reduction in a female’s risk of mammary cancer, pyometra (uterine infection), vaginal prolapses and nil risk of cancer of the uterus and ovaries
- Heavy reduction of a male’s risk of prostatic disease like enlargement and infection and nil risk of testicular cancer
- Can help reduce wandering and/or aggressive behaviour

What do Anexa Vets automatically include in our de-sexing packages?
- A thorough pre-anaesthetic clinical exam on the day of surgery
- General anaesthesia, including a nurse and special equipment dedicated solely to monitoring your pet’s anaesthetic and recovery
- The surgery itself
- All of our de-sexing packages include ongoing pain relief – we take pain control seriously and want to maximise your pet’s comfort and recovery back to normal.
- All our female dog desexing prices have intravenous fluids included.
What optional extras are available at Anexa Vets for my pet’s comfort?
Naturally, all surgical procedures carry some patient-risk and the following are some optional extras we recommend so that you can minimize it:
- Pre-anaesthetic bloodwork: among other things, this screens your pet’s liver and kidney function which, on top of our clinical exam, gives us confidence in your pet’s ability to cope with a general anaesthetic and whether we need to adjust which drugs we use. Sometimes, this bloodwork can highlight an underlying disease that wasn’t apparent on the clinic exam that requires further investigation before having an anaesthetic.
- Fluid therapy: Intravenous fluid therapy aids blood pressure control and can help correct fluid and blood loss. Pets that have fluid therapy tend to have a smoother anaesthetic and recover faster. All our female dog desexing prices have intravenous fluids included.
- Elizabethan collar (cone of shame): this little beauty has nothing to do with the anaesthetic and everything to do with preventing the surgical wounds and stitches becoming infected during healing!
