Tom David, Veterinarian, Anexa Vets Raglan

Winter’s a good time to consider sitting with one of our vets to make a new, or update your existing Animal Health Plan.  Health plans can be very helpful to have on-farm. It can also be handy to have a copy for employees so they can see what’s going on through the year.

The NZ Farm Assurance Programme does require an animal health plan (in some form) as part of the audit process.

The health plan is generally a yearly wall planner broken down by stock class. It outlines the optimal treatments and timing for you to use on the farm. It takes a few hours to talk through options and agree on everything. We will then put in some mahi to get it all on a wall planner.

When creating a health plan our main goal is to improve farm productivity and profitability by:

  • Identify and remedy areas where animals are underperforming.
  • Getting the most bang for your buck from required animal health treatments.
  • Prevent improper use of products that may be unsustainable in the long term, or simply a waste of money.
