Companion Animal After-hours Veterinary Care
Anexa Vets are passionate about pets, we want what is best for them. To ensure that our team are fresh and focused during clinic hours we utilize the use of external after-hours service, much like your local human medical centre.
If you have an after hours emergency, please call your Anexa clinic like you normally would. You will then have the option to speak to veterinary personnel from VetCheck where they will discuss a management plan with you for your pet, or advise you to travel through to Waikato After Hours Hospital.

Frequently asked questions
What services does an after-hours veterinary hospital provide?
After-hours veterinary hospitals provide in-person emergency care for companion animals, much like Accident and Emergency Hospitals for humans. They are open after-hours when your regular vet is not, and enable quality around-the-clock emergency and hospital care.
What is VetCheck?
VetCheck provides a triage service over the phone to determine if a visit to after-hours is necessary, or if a management plan for your pet would be suitable, until your local clinic is open, much like 0800 Healthline call centre does for humans.
If I take my pet to the after-hours vet, does that mean I need to have all the treatment provided there?
The vet team will assess your pet and talk through the options with you – these will be dependent on your pet’s needs. In the morning (or when your local Anexa clinic is open again) your pet will be transferred back to your clinic with comprehensive notes, diagnostic results.
Why do Anexa Vets not provide their own after-hours service for companion animals?
Pet ownership has become even more popular over the last couple of years, and with it the demand for veterinary care has grown. To allow our veterinarians and nurses to be able to carry out their work and deliver the best care to our patients, they need to be able to rest and recharge after a busy day, so they are ready to do it all again the next day. With the global shortage of veterinarians, it is important we adapt so we can continue to provide great service to your pets during working hours.
What can I expect from the after-hours veterinary service?
New Zealand now has many after-hours emergency hospitals located around the country, to support veterinary practices by offering out of hours emergency care for your pet. With nurses and vets on-site through the night and on weekends, your pet will receive a high level of care and monitoring at these hospitals, with the ability to treat more serious emergency concerns. For more minor concerns, they can provide pain relief and a management plan to get you through until you can see your primary vet the following day. The emergency hospitals will give you the options best suited to your pet, and work with you to come up with a plan that works well for your pet and your situation. They also have several payment options should you need.
What should I do if I find injured wildlife?
Forest and bird, the Department of Conservation and the SPCA all have information on what to do if you find injured wildlife, please see the websites for further information.
